Drinking with the Moon [mp3]

A little poetry to whet your whistle...

China Books
[chinabooks.com],"America's #1 source of publications about China since 1960,"1 is offering a free audiobook download [MP3/73.3MB/Chinese] of Drinking with the Moon by Dr. Jeannette Faurot, "a selection of the finest Chinese poems for self-study or classroom use. Included are poems from the literacy tradition of classical China, including the Tang and Song Dynasties"1 read by native Chinese speakers. (The title is rated 18-24/Advanced, i.e., people who possess HSK Level 7+.)

But even if you don't understand Chinese, having poetry read to you can be quite hypnotic. Use it for a mood piece. Expand your horizons.

In case you (do read/understand Chinese or are learning the language and) want to follow along with the audio, China Books also sells a paperback version of Drinking with the Moon $16.95 USD |buy|. (It is currently out of stock, however.)

ASIDE: Video3 (above) is footage of "a Chinese Muslim calligrapher (Haji Noordeen)2 visiting an American Muslim poet (Daniel Abdal-Hayy Moore)2 to read Tang poems in both Chinese and translated English...."1 Saw it on the China Books blog.

To download the free title you will need to provide an email address, and then review and accept the China Books user agreement (which outlays your rights to use the file). A link to the appropriate download will be sent to whatever email you provide. So make sure the email address is valid and check your Spam folder. (The confirmation email should come from "orders[at]chinabooks.com.")

BOZ the Bear [mov]

For the (religious) parents and/or kiddies among us... BOZ, the Green Bear Next Door, is an animated character which teaches a positive (religious) message. Lookit, from the site:

"BOZ, The Green Bear Next Door, loves exploring God's world and discovering exciting new things with his friends Drew and Gracie, their family, and all their friends in the neighborhood.

While your children are attracted to the wonderful stories, great sing-along songs, and fanciful animation, you will appreciate what makes BOZ unique.

BOZ is the only DVD series that combines faith, education and family into one exciting and fun-filled show. BOZ helps reinforce the values you are already teaching your preschoolers."
Now that you have a bit of background, on to the download-to-own freebie. Over the weekend, it was advertised that the first 5,000 people to sign-up via a specific web link could request a free BOZ DVD sampler that included "a full BOZ episode, a read-along book, BOZ's own video scrapbook, and more!"

Needless to say the sampler's supplies have been depleted. However, I discovered that the nice folks behind BOZ are making two music videos available for download to those who missed out on the DVD sampler giveaway.

Be aware, the special web link asks you to register for the sampler giveaway. (Registration puts you on the BOZ mailing list.) Once you do, you should receive a nice message saying:
"We have received your request for the BOZ DVD sampler and regret to inform you that the first 5000 people have already registered to get their free BOZ DVD sampler.

However, as our way of thanking you and to introduce BOZ to your family, we'd love to provide you with two FREE exclusive downloads of BOZ music videos. These music videos can be downloaded only through this special offer."
The two music videos being given away are God's Green Earth (MOV/7.5MB) and Read a Book (MOV/8.9MB).

At least this'll be something for your iPod that may help keep the kids entertained on the next road trip. Of course, being that I run a multimedia blog for handhelds, I was more excited to learn about the (downloadable) consolation prize than I had been about the original free DVD sampler. Enjoy!

Killing Time 24/7 [mp4]

Earlier I discussed a pair of independent filmmakers who by-passed the whole film industry quagmire by releasing their film straight-to-iPod. (Check the post here.)

Not to be left out, the PSP also has its share of entrepreneurial indie film fans. One such person is John Lamond Jr., an independent filmmaker based in Bangkok and the head of Sukhumvit Films.

Apparently, Lamond Jr. likes the PSP so much that he made an independent film and released it straight-to-PSP so that other PSP fanatics could enjoy it. Released in 2006, his movie, Killing Time 24/7 [ZIP/392MB/MP4], is available for free download from his website [killingtime-24-7.com]. You can also download a trailer [ZIP/5.9MB/MP4] of the movie to see if it's your cup of tea, before buying the cow and downloading the full feature.

The content is dark enough that the film carries a mature audience warning. The story is a day in the life of a young Asian hit man named Jake. Jake escapes from the reality of his violent existence by imagining he is a character in a video game. To find out the rest, you'll have to get the download...

NOTICE: Viewer discretion is advised. This film contains partial nudity, graphic violence, and foul language.

NONONO iPod V0.2 [sit]

And now for something completely different in honor of the Summer Solstice and the birthday of not one, but two special people today. It's Mobile Art.

For the layman: Not only can personal media players play movies and music, but many models can also handle photos and slideshow viewing (and this is a multimedia blog). Test your model with today's offering. See a virtual art exhibit on your handheld.

msdm [msdm.org.uk] is "a research bureau for mobile strategies of display and mediation in art and new media" founded by Paula Roush, who is a "media art practitioner and lecturer at the London South Bank University and the University of Westminster." Not only can you subscribe to msdm's photocast -- an RSS feed of art images/photos -- but you can also download one of Ms. Roush's new projects which has been tailored just for iPod Photo (or other compatible PMP).

NONONO iPod V0.2: NONONO -- short for NO OFFICIAL BUILDINGS NO LOCAL PEOPLE NO OIL FACILITIES -- is a collaborative effort between the aforementioned Ms. Roush and Marcel Tolbarin, a London-based consulting engineer.

"The project contains photographs by Tolbarin of Saudi Arabia, where a ban on photography in public areas has recently been lifted, but where tourists are still not allowed to photograph official buildings, local people nor oil facilities."
And because Ms. Roush is very interested in media as a mobile concept, you can get your own virtual showing of the exhibit [Stuffit Compressed Archive File].

BTW, some of the photos will also be shown in the real world exhibit Destination Area 10, which opens today in Peckham, London. If you're in the area... There's also an art book in the works, which will be available from lulu.com -- "the web's premier independent publishing marketplace for digital do-it-yourselfers" -- if you prefer to have a more tactile virtual experience (or stay all digital and get the eBook version).

So get over there...
  • Download NONONO iPod V0.2 [SIT] by Marcel Tolbarin + Paula Roush
  • Order NONONO (Paperback or eBook) by Paula Roush

FYI:
SIT (Stuff-It for Macintosh Compressed Archive) is MAC-native, but many Windows unpackers will also handle this file type. Once the file is unzipped the 101 image files are just iPod-screen-sized jpgs. The msdm web site even has some nifty instructions to help you get the slideshow on your iPod Photo.

High Times [mp3]

Here's a quickie for ya. Rolling Stone magazine [rollingstone.com] is giving away an MP3 of the song High Times by Elliott Smith.

Elliott Smith, for anyone who doesn't know, gained wide-spread fame when several of his songs were used on the Good Will Hunting soundtrack. (Apparently Gus Van Sant, the film's director, is a fan.) Elliott Smith already had a very loyal "underground" following by the time Good Will Hunting hit the public conscious, however.

One of his songs from Good Will Hunting, a cut called Miss Misery, was nominated for an Oscar® (1997). The award would go to Celine Dion for My Heart Will Go On from the Titanic soundtrack. But not before Smith, clad in a white suit, took the stage to perform his track live, and bring himself to the attention of a legion of new fans. (I can still vividly recall the scene. I'm not an award show fan in general, but had tuned in to see the musical performances.)

Tragically, Smith died several years later (21-Oct-2003) of a stab wound to the chest, in an apparent suicide. (The case is still open.) He had struggled with depression and drug addiction for some time, and there was some question as to whether being in an increasing spotlight contributed to his undoing.

He was a gifted being. And you should check out this track.

(And the title didn't hint at that at all, did it?) On offer is a free 9-minute preview. Considering it's a Pixar film, 9-minutes for free might be a good haul. You decide. Inner Surge - Wolves [video]

Canadian rock band Inner Surge [innersurge.com] is offering a free download of their latest video called Wolves. Helmed by first-time director Shaun Friesen of Free Zen Design [FreeZen.ca], the video looks at "the events leading to and during the 1994 Rwandan genocide" and is a bit of a departure from the band's last video project.

Friesen and Inner Surge teamed up previously in 2005, when Free Zen Design created the original artwork for Inner Surge's Signals Screaming album. In the video, Friesen uses animation and collage to make his point, while the band provides the soundtrack.

The band was inspired to write the song by Rwandans, famous and ordinary alike, who stood up to help during the 1994 crisis.

In addition to being broadcast via several web video sites, the music video has been made available for download in various formats, including one that's perfect for iPod [M4V]. You can pick the resolution that's right for your specific PMP needs -- plus there's are larger format for desktop viewing.

Blog Admin Notice!!!

NOTICE: Going forward, I'm changing the blog format a bit. I've decided to post each item in a separate "box" so that it can be found more easily when searching. If you're looking for a specific thing, you may not want to read through a page long list to find it.

This may mean that some posts are quite brief as the item may just be a single MP3 or some such, whereas other posts (called spotlights), will contain more detail. I will also try to put the item name and its format in the post title, so you can quickly gage if it's something of interest to you.

Finally, I now plan to post items of interest as I find them, which means that some days there may be four or five items posted, but other days (when nothing has caught my attention) there may not be a post. So why don't you subscribe to the site feed, so that you're notified when new items hit.

iPod Film Festival

Here's something to get you over the mid-week hump. Check out the 2007 iPod Film Festival sponsored by The Flux [theflux.tv]. That's right! You can participate in this independent film festival by subscribing to the video podcast feed, downloading the entries, viewing the films, and casting your vote for the winner.

But you've got to act fast! Voting ends 11-Jun-07 (with votes being tabulated beginning on the 12th). Your vote will be combined with those of the festival panel judges to name the prize winner/s. Don't Worry! You can still download and watch the festival entries after the 12th, but you will be unable to vote.

This is a nifty idea! Instead of trekking to someplace like Cannes, this film festival comes to you via a handy podcast subscription. So not only can you download films to keep, but you also get to act as a judge and help determine the festival's grand prize winner. This is definitely the wave of the future!

This is the second annual iPod Film Festival. And it's been so popular the organizers have had to adjust the format a bit, adding an elimination round to whittle down the number of entries. But this just means more independent film goodness for movie buffs like me -- and you!

The festival entries have been broken into three categories: Student Film, Indie Film, and the Kitchen Sink -- a catch-all category. And feel free to discuss the entries and write reviews of them. (Start a round table discussion, or invite friends to participate.) In other words, give the filmmakers feedback!

BTW, you can also watch the films online, if you don't wish to download them. Visit theflux.tv/ipodfest for more information.

But the real excitement comes in participating in a film festival virtually via iPod (or the compatible personal media player of your choice). So go ahead, join in the fun!

NOTE: "Content in this festival may not be suitable for children. Parental discretion advised."

Rune: The Movie

Up today, a chance to grab a copy of a film called Rune, billed as "the world's first feature film exclusively for the iPod." The film -- Made on a Mac and Made for iPod -- is a 90-minute mystery-noir piece that's worth the price of your ticket -- in this case, free! (You do use bandwidth for the download, of course, but this should be negligible in the scheme of things.)

Filmmakers Arayna Thomas and S.E. Kenlon, felt a groundbreaking "straight-to-iPod" distribution method would make their movie easily accessible to a burgeoning audience. And industry wags are taking notice. Hoping to take advantage of Word-of-Mouth (WOM) marketing, this pair of indie filmmakers accepted the free-sharing of their movie in exchange for buzz and viral marketability. And the strategy seems to be paying off. Not only, are the filmmakers themselves in hot demand (they've been making a circuit of university film departments, and have been asked to film festival panels), but the movie is getting noticed on its on merit. Rune, the movie [runethemovie.com] was released for free digital download in mid-October 2006, and has been receiving glowing recommendations for its production, content, and distribution methodology.

So what's the story line? Lookit, from the site:
"What would you do if you woke up tomorrow and everyone in the World spoke the same Language?"
That's right, a strange language-mutation has occurred and suddenly all languages are now but one. Well, sort of... what actually happens (in the movie) is that a linguist discovers an artifact which can decode the root of human language - all language. This could be a boon for mankind! However, there are "bad guys" who want to use the power of this artifact for their own benefit. Key the suspense.

As I love literary-thrillers, this is right up my alley. And you can join in the fun as well by downloading your own legal copy of the movie [704.24MB/MP4]. Or if you prefer you may purchase a DVD of the film and have it shipped to you.

The filmmakers have also created some PSA's and other tidbits that are available for free download, too. And as an added bonus Ted Quinn [tedquinn.com], whose song Power Struggle is featured during the end credits to Rune, is giving away a digital download of his entire album [160kbps/44.1khz/MP3] featuring the track. ("Get the music for free, pay for the album art.") All this and more in the Extras section at the Rune web site.

Relevant link/s are below:
  • Download Rune [web] -- the movie
  • Download Dog Years [web] -- Ted Quinn's album featuring the single Power Struggle

UPDATE: 29-Jun-07 / A version of Rune has now been formatted especially for iPhone -- thanks to blease for the notice.
