Free Unbox Downloads [wmv]

Amazon Unbox Video Downloads service currently has several TV show episodes available for free download for a limited-time.

Get free intro episodes (generally the free download is the pilot episode of each series) of Acceptable.tv, Flavor of Love Girls, The Big Gay Sketch Show, Rock of Love, I Hate My 30's, The Rock Life, The Real World: Sydney, Newport Harbor: The Real Orange County, and The Pick-up Artist.

FYI: Most of these items were also available for free on iTunes at an earlier date, so if you use multiple services as I do, you may already own these downloads -- or if you missed getting them for free on iTunes, here's your chance. Note that the resolution (bitrate) of Unbox video files for PC may be higher than the portable format videos sold on iTunes (i.e., formated for iPod video). If you mainly watch things on your computer, you may want to nab a higher resolution file while it's free, even if you already got a copy from iTunes. (Compare the specs with each iTunes M4V file to be certain which version has the better clarity.) Unbox also gives you the option of downloading a portable resolution version, too -- but these are not compatible with iPods, only Windows Plays For Sure mobile devices.

Additionally, if you are a new Unbox customer, you should also get a $1.99 USD credit added to your account after you place your first Unbox order. This credit is good towards another video download -- which means you could also get another free TV Show episode as most of these list at the $1.99 price point. If you have not previously used the Unbox service, "purchasing" any of the free episodes above should count as your first Unbox order.

If the Best Price/s listed below has changed from $0.00, then this offer has expired. You can use the "offer source" link at the bottom of this post to see a list of all the current Free Unbox Downloads, or simply click the individual link for the specific item you're interested in below.

NOTE: Amazon Unbox Video Downloads are in DRM-protected formats. Each download is either a DVD-quality PC File [WMV] or a TiVo "Best Quality" video [MPEG-2] playable on a Series2 or Series3 TiVo DVR. In addition, you also have the option of downloading a portable media player version of any videos that you purchase. Portable version videos -- in Amazon's own container [AMZN] -- work in most Windows Plays For Sure mobile devices. You need an Amazon account in order to use the Unbox Video Downloads service. Account registration is free. All Unbox purchases (after the first one) are made using 1-Click ordering (which means you'll need a valid credit card on file), so do verify all prices before submitting an order.

DivX Mobile Media

DivX has just announced a mobile (phone) version of its video service -- they're calling it DivX Mobile Media -- which can be accessed directly on your compliant mobile phone via http://mm.divx.com, or alternately at http://mobilemedia.divx.com on a computer.

The service uses the mobile internet to download videos directly to your phone, so connection (and likely data) charges will apply. The site is currently in beta.

Alternately, to avoid such charges, you can select videos from the regular DivX service to convert to DivX video (Mobile Profile) and then transfer these to your phone via a connector cable, media card, wireless, or Bluetooth® (depending on the specifics of your particular phone).

A How-To Guide as well as overviews of the mobile service requirements can be found at the "offer source" link below.

Million Voices [wma]

That's it for this week's iTunes roll. It's kinda nice to see the international stores get an extra free track/s for the week. I'll wrap up for the day with Sam's place...

Wal-Mart Music Downloads

The Wal-Mart Music Downloads free track for this week is an acoustic version of the song Million Voices by Christian trio BarlowGirl.

NOTE: Wal-Mart Music Downloads now come in two flavors: 1) DRM-protected Windows Media Audio and/or Video [WMA/WMV] files, or 2) DRM-Free MP3 files. (Not all audio items have an MP3 purchase option. So far only items from Universal Music Group and EMI Group are available.) The Wal-Mart Music Downloads store may require IE (or at least IE Tab) to access its web site (and the service is not Mac friendly). In order to download items from the store, you need to have a Wal-Mart Music Downloads store account, and to install the (Windows only) Music Downloads Store Management software. It's free to register for an account.

This preview episode appears as the first selection under all of the "Follow Your Team" series for NFL programming on iTMS. The link I've selected below is for the Colts, but the episode is the same regardless of how it's accessed. (Select another team if you prefer...)

Bobbysbrane Ani... [mov/wmv]

Apparently, Bobby Standridge [bobbysbrane.com] is quite the Neil Peart [neilpeart.net] fan, having spent 18 odd months analyzing the Rush drummer to create a digitally animated short of him performing the track YYZ. The short was so successful that it launched Bobby's professional career in animation -- which has taken him to such places as ESPN. It seems Bobby is still a dedicated Rush fan; however, because he has also created the official Rush music video for the song Malignant Narcissism.

Bobby has put up on his web site both the YYZ short and the Malignant Narcissism video, along with several other items from his animation portfolio, and he's made them all available for free download. (Most clips are available as either WMV or MOV, but a few only have one format option.)

Magician's Daughter [mp3]

Do you know a lonely child?

Australian author Justyn Walker has made the first nine chapters (over 5 hours of listening materials) of his Christian Fantasy novel, The Magician's Daughter, available for free MP3 download, as a teaser. The novel is the first in a series which centers on the character Georgie Tanner [georgietanner.com].

Here's more background on the author and the series:

"...but it was in Brazil that Justyn stayed with a group of orphans that were later to inspire the character of Georgie Tanner.

Returning to Australia in October 2001, Justyn began writing his first novel, a fantasy story inspired by the orphans he had met in Brazil. That book was The Magician's Daughter and the main character was a girl named Georgie Tanner, a misfit growing up in a London orphanage. The Magician's Daughter, The Ancient Machine and Flight of the Evening Star are Justyn's message of hope to lonely children in a world of hurt and insecurity. His stories are allegories (set in the land of Allegoria) and there is much meaning written into each book for the more inquisitive reader."1
If you enjoy the story and would like the remaining chapters, you may purchase an MP3 download for $11.00 (Australian). The site accepts PayPal.

Give 'em a try, you can beat the message:

Madlib Beat Kond... [m4v/mp3]

Above video: Beat Konducta in India (clip) by Madlib

Label Stones Throw Records [stonesthrow.com] has put up some free goodies from Beat Konducta in India (Beat Konducta Vol. 3-4), the upcoming dual-disc release from triple-threat Madlib (rapper, producer, and DJ) that is due out 28-Aug-07. The album's genre is being called "Bollywood Hip-Hop" -- if you don't know what that's like, then cue the video above.

You can snag a copy of Masala [1:38mins/1.88MB/MP3] -- one of the shortest cuts on the album -- as well as the Beat Konducta in India video clip [1:42mins/12.3MB/M4V] above. If you'd like a full track listing or more info on Madlib, check his Stones Throw artist's page (the "Offer Source!" link below).

PART 2:
There's also a "bootleg alert" on Madlib's page regarding a disc entitled Live at Chocolate City which states: "This was a bootleg mix CD made from audio downloaded at KCRW.com. Madlib did not profit from this CD and did not authorize it. If you would like to download the full 60 min. mix and make your own CD, be our guests."1

How many artists and record companies encourage you to download an unauthorized bootleg? And then host a copy themselves to make it easy for you?

You can view the track listing and grab and MP3 copy of the mix via the link below:

Lance Audio Workouts [m4a]

It's supposed to be easier to workout consistently and correctly when you have a trainer or coach (mine is the dog who wants to be walked every hour). But in the modern age, that coach doesn't have to be human or canine, it can be a virtual trainer -- a voice echoing out of the box. And that's what you can get today.

Powerbar [powerbar.com] has teamed up with Lance Armstrong -- who ran the NY Marathon sub-3 hours -- and his coach Chris Carmichael, who is the founder and CEO of Carmichael Training Systems [trainright.com], to offer you two free audio running workout downloads for a limited-time only.

Chris provides timed-interval audio instruction, while Lance provides advice from an elite athlete perspective. Check the program descriptions below:

"Audio Workout #1 - Running Intervals – 58:20 – Emphasizes speed and your body’s ability to transport oxygen at maximum capacity. Alternates between 1 and 2-minute speed intervals with 2-minute recovery periods.

Audio Workout #2 - Tempo Intervals – 1:13:20 – Designed to improve aerobic development, help establish a good running rhythm, and simulate race conditions. This workout includes running at tempo pace for 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12-minute intervals with 2-minute recovery periods."1
The downloads are MPEG-4 audio files -- Audio Workout #1 [58:20/54.4MB/M4A] and Audio Workout #2 [1:13:20/68.9MB/M4A] -- suitable for syncing with your iPod or other compatible portable media player.

To access the free downloads you are required to register with Carmichael Training Systems. Registration asks for name, zip code, and email address in addition to your creating a username and password.

Body of Art [mp4/mov]

Auteur filmmaker Mac Kelly is creating the Body of Art video blog (vlog) while on the set of his latest motion picture, Safety First: The Rise of Women. IMO his video vignette's are irreverent, beautiful, humorous, eerie, offensive and inspiring all at once. In other words, worth checking out.

One thing is for certain however, Mac is fascinated by the female form. Episodes of his video diary may be downloaded individually as iPod video files [M4V] or QuickTime movies [MOV], or you can save the trouble and subscribe to the podcast to have the downloads delivered to you automatically.

Visit the Body of Art Vlog
web site (either link below) for a plethora of subscription options, if you're interested. The web site also has raw footage from the shoots and other background data available, in addition to web videos of all the episodes -- so you can watch them first online, and then decide which ones to download for keeps.

Kessel Short Stories [mp3]

With the help of his friend, James Patrick Kelly, Science Fiction author and North Carolina State University professor John Kessel has made two of his short stories available for free download as unabridged audio editions.

Kessel reads "A Clean Escape" [~30mins/16.9MB/MP3] which was first published in Asimov's Science Fiction (1985) and was recently adapted for television, appearing as the first part of the Masters Of Science Fiction mini-series which aired on ABC in the past few weeks, and "Some Like It Cold" [~30mins/16.6MB/MP3] which was first published in Omni (1994).

Kessel states that he hopes to read and record more of his works in the near future. So check back with the site.

SMSCRSS: MoboVivo Inc.

MoboVivo® -- When Life Is Mobile!

>> FREE $5.00 Gift Card offer at bottom of this post.

| SMSCR Sunday Spotlight |

As entertainment, education, and business communications move increasingly into a virtual realm, the companies that provide the services to mobilize content will be pushed into a brighter spotlight. A few days ago, I got to sit down virtually with Trevor Doerksen, CEO and Co-Founder of MoboVivo, Inc., to discuss his company and its place in a rapidly expanding mobile (as in portable and accessible anytime, anywhere) landscape.

Following is the tale of my email interview with Trevor. I emailed him the questions, he sent me the answers. This transcript has been adapted for the small-screen. It may also have been edited for clarity, and typos (mostly my own):

I decided to start the interview with the obvious. So I asked what the company name meant.

MoboVivo is of course a combined form of the words mobile + life, which goes along way toward summing up what it is the company happens to be about. But just to make absolutely certain my next question was even more leading.

Could you give us a quick overview of your company, touching on your business model, when the company was founded, how long it has been in business, the company vision, its size, and etc.. (Not a mouthful at all, right?) Let's take it in parts...

Business model? Trevor wrote: "MoboVivo licenses and distributes television programming to portable devices. We do this mainly through our online WebStore. In dealing with large content owners, of which there are few that own all necessary rights, Rapid Repurposing Technology leverages our ability to license and then distribute their content. We sell TV shows directly to end-users for use on computers, iPods, phones, PSPs and so on. We also allow others to brand our technology with their own for both ad-supported and paid download business models."

When founded/how long in business? Trevor wrote: "We founded the company in 2005, started licensing in 2006 and opened our alpha store in spring of 2006, the beta in fall of 2006."

And to wrap up the question, what is the company vision, size, etc.? Trevor wrote: "We are small, but growing. There are about 4 of us that obsess about MoboVivo. Despite such a small team we have been able to license thousands of shows from big companies in Canada, US and the UK. We have been able to execute - prepare all that video, market it using everything from bus stop and subway ads to online viral marketing. We have been able to build technology and serve our thousands of customers' needs. We even adjusted our platform for the iPhone and Apple TV the same day those products became available. We are the first company in Canada, and maybe the first in the world, that is selling TV programming online internationally. Our competition likely has fewer international licenses to TV programming than MoboVivo. The vision is to grow. We need do many things better. From licensing to marketing, we need to automate and scale our platform to provide more and more content and services to our customers."

Now that's interesting! How had such a small company moved so quickly to become the mobile content distributor for Canadian TV and other realms? This made me wonder about the content distribution deals MoboVivo has struck. So I asked...

Would you discuss (your) content partnerships... the major players you are working with, any new deals on the horizon which you can talk about, any plans to produce your own original programming? Or will you stick with delivery? I like multi-part questions.

Major Players? Trevor wrote: "CBC, TVF International, Decode, marblemedia, WildTV, IMG Worldwide."

Any new content deals on the horizon that you can talk about? Trevor wrote: "We are about to announce a couple of great new programs and agreements including some soccer and extreme sports with IMG Worldwide..."

Plans to produce your own original programming? Trevor wrote: "My background is in production. I produced, directed and distributed one of the earliest snowboarding videos in the late 80's - Pipe Dreams. Recently I was the executive producer of a science television series called SciQ and I have been producing TV and video and multimedia for nearly 20 years. We did raise some money recently from an investor (we have been self-funded until now), but I don't see MoboVivo doing original programming right now. Too many other things to get done."

It turns out that almost all of the mobile content MoboVivo offers for download is exclusive to their webstore. So of course, I wanted to know more about the webstore itself.

How many programs/videos are currently available on the service (roughly)? Could you highlight some of your bestsellers? Would you discuss your content channels (subject groups), and available selection? I wonder belatedly if I'm giving him a headache with the multi-part thing. He kindly responded anyway.

Trevor wrote: "I think there are around 100 programs and 1000 episodes. We sell a lot of documentaries, cooking, yoga, and children's TV shows. One of our channels, MoboDiva, is targeted at women and it is responsible for nearly 50% of our customers being females. Not to leave out the guys we also have a channel called UrbanVivo which has a number of the most racy programs. The shows may be about bikini contests, night clubs, brothels, or guys hanging on meat hooks by the skin on their back. Our documentary channel is very popular and is core to some of the values the company started with. We wanted to distribute programming that helped people feel smart. Our newest channel will open in the Fall (and) will feature a number of travel shows, for all ages, from around the world."

I am now one of the female 50%, although I haven't purchased any MoboDiva programming. I like documentaries, and yes, I do feel smart. I thought the MoboVivo webstore was easy to use when I tried it, but I wanted to get the particulars in writing anyhow.

Would you give a brief overview of your webstore features? Price point/s, download formats, DRM usage, forms of payment accepted, service restrictions and service guarantee?

Shows are available as portable media player ready MP4 files at $1.99/episode and the webstore accepts major credits cards. All prices are Canadian Dollars. Some downloads are restricted by territory, depending on the licensing agreement. But here's the kicker...

Use of DRM? Trevor wrote: "We limit sales through the use of our Resolute DRM to territories in which we have permission to sell programs. This is all over the map, literally, and our approach makes this very simple to restrict or enable downloads accordingly. We have not been asked by any of our content partners to enable DRM that would infect users computers with tracking or exploding files - so we don't."

Service Guarantee? Trevor wrote: "MoboVivo is committed to our customers satisfaction. As long as we are able, anybody that needs to re-download a file or has problems will be able to get their file. Unlike our competitors, this policy helps us interact with our customers and provide the highest level of service. We have found that a great number of people purchase a whole season at once and don't (always) get the 15 to 20+ shows they ordered downloaded or have lost them when something went wrong with their computer. Our telephone line and support email are answered within 12 hours."

With such a proactive idea of customer satisfaction, I wondered what Trevor saw in his company's future.

Where do you see MoboVivo in a years time? Any developments brewing that you can tell us about? Will you expand to other channels?

Trevor wrote: "We are looking at several things.
1. Doing more of what we are already doing - licensing, distributing, marketing and enabling through white labeling our platform.
2. Adding movies, music, and games is likely.
3. I am working on something with virtual items. I believe that people will buy more virtual futons and t-shirts for their avatar if they can watch TV from the futon and proudly display their favourite movie or band on their avatar t-shirt in their virtual world or social networking site. Bringing digital items, digital media, and the "meat world" together is something we are building. In fact we call it the DIVE Engine, Digital Item Virtual Economy Engine and we will be able to bring licensed content, licensed goods, and digital items to existing and new virtual worlds."

I love that "u" in favorite. Oh Canada! Forgive me, I digress. I had one last question and it was a zinger. In the world of download-to-own content everyone knows there's an elephant in the room. You can't ignore it, it might trample you. It's called iTunes. Which made me wonder....

Do you see yourselves as a competitor or a complement to a service like iTunes, or a different beast altogether? (What's your niche and how does it differ from other download stores?)

Trevor wrote: "Not sure. Maybe (a) competitor. Yes, a complement (also). We are global. iTunes for TV is US only... (but) iTunes seems to have captured the niche US market well. :)"

After all that exhaustive questioning, Trevor still had the grace to end it with a smile (or a least a smiley). Thus I knew about MoboVivo, and now so do you. There's more yet, and a deal for you, too. (I'll stop the bad rhyming, I promise.)

MILD DISCLAIMER: The above tale may not have happened exactly the way I wrote it, but the quotes are for real (parenthetical additions are mine), and so is this company. I thoroughly enjoyed "meeting and chatting" with Trevor in the virtual realm, and I sincerely want to thank him for agreeing to this email interview.

MoboVivo has been on my radar for a while -- I subscribed to their content feed alerts over a year ago -- and I was intrigued about what made them tick, because I love the quirky and interesting content they offer in their download-to-own store. So when I got the latest alert, which showed a free preview of a cooking show, I visited the web site, and looked around a bit. I thought to myself I like this company. I like having the ability to purchase lush and interesting content downloads, and so I clicked-through to join the MoboVivo Facebook Group, hoping to get an insider's viewpoint.

I got more than this. There is currently a promotion ongoing which gives those who join the Facebook Group a $5.00 Virtual Gift Card to the MoboVivo Webstore, while supplies last. As show downloads are $1.99 per episode, you can get two episodes for free, and a third at a discount.

You need to be a Facebook member to join the MoboVivo Group, but it's free to join Facebook and membership is now open to anyone. Link #1 below takes you to Facebook where you can register or login (if you're already a member). Once you're on Facebook, you can then join the MoboVivo Group.
  1. Join the MoboVivo Facebook Group [^web] and get a $5.00 Gift Card to the MoboVivo Webstore! (The virtual gift card will be sent to your Facebook inbox.)
  2. Subscribe to the MoboVivo® Podcast [^iTunes] or MoboVivo Previews via Feedburner [^web] and get notified when new shows are available! Plus you get free preview video clips.

NOTE: The MoboVivo Webstore is still technically in beta, so you may experience a glitch or two. My own experience was a breeze, but I'm just giving you the goods. The Gift Card promotion above expires at the end of September or while supplies last. However, MoboVivo has plans to replace it with another promotion.
